Test Your Mindfoolness

I’ve found that, by immersing myself over the past two decades in their findings, Neuroscience and Behavioural Insights can help you to see inside of your brain and add so much more to your understanding of your behaviours and actions.

At Mindsways, I’m using these findings and practical, everyday experiences by taking the wisdom of these disciplines and combining them with the magician’s mindset. One of the findings that I’ve uncovered illustrates this is by showing how illusions work with the Expectation Effect. This clearly shows how your mind can be fooled. Expectation Biology

I believe that most your behaviour is determined through your subconscious. Some current thinking is that as much as 95% of it is not directly available to us (see Gerald Zaltman – How Customers Think). The power of our expectations, movements of the subconscious which aren’t directly available to us, and how this can affect us in so many ways is a large part of what we look at with Mindsways.

Expectation is just a series of a shortcuts that we need for our day to day activities. However, we don’t always observe the world as it really. We see it as how we think it should be seen.

You cannot believe what you see, but you see what you believe.

When this happens, our brains twist and turn reality to bring our observations in line with our expectations. If you expect negative things to happen, things will look negative. However, if your expectations are positive, things can appear better. You can see many examples of this in our video above.

The Cornerstone of Neuromarketing

Expectation is a cornerstone of Neuromarketing ideas and plays a large role in understanding the Behavioural Science nudges which we apply throughout Mindsways. Expectation is also a very valuable asset that we use as mentalists and magicians. Expectation Violation is not only a useful tool, method and approach for magicians, but is also vital in gaining attention.

Expectation has the capacity to transform thinking into a measurable, physiological response which can be positive or negative. Another example of this is Alia Crumb’s work that I talk about in the video.

We are at the beck and call of our expectations, both positive and negative. The more you understand this. and the more techniques you can apply here, the greater your skill base will be. Understanding the role of our expectations is vital if we are to understand how we think and behave.

Working with illusions will provide valuable insights into expectations and into how:

  • Our brains work
  • We perceive
  • We think
  • We learn
  • We make decisions
  • We problem solve

Infinite Plasticity

We have infinite brain plasticity, so we can change, grow and develop new skills. We advocate using this to create new thinking patterns, new techniques, and new skills. We are all far from perfect, so we all continue to grow and learn every day.
